When I was 12 years old, my family moved and my life split in half like a ripe watermelon.
There was the Jill of Las Vegas - all sunshine and best friends and swimming pools. And there was the Jill of Salt Lake - all snow and depression and culture shock. 12 is a really fragile age, and as I work with my middle schoolers today, I always keep that in mind. The awkward, new girl that I was.
Uprooted is a graphic novel memoir that follows Ruth when her family moves from Canada back to Hong Kong. It is achingly true, bittersweet. I recognized in Ruth that desperate need for friendship, the hours on the phone, the pains of not quite fitting in. A perfect middle grade graphic novel memoir.
Five other middle grade books I’ve loved recently:
The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman by Jennifer Choldenko
If you only read one from this list, make it this one!
But then read this second!
Not Quite a Ghost by Anne Ursu
And then pick this up when you’re in the mood for a most creative horror story
And then reserve this at the library when you want a tearjerker of a novel in verse
And finally, find your way here when you want to read a book full of grace
Have you read anything great lately?
Middle grade is the best!! I love these ones.
(Also I grew up in Provo!)
These look fabulous! Can't say enough about Candle Island, Lauren Wolk's new book. Now I'm finally reading My Own Lightening, her sequel to Wolf Hollow. Liking this one very much too!
